Hi. I am working 18 hrs per week. I have worked out from another site I can claim £35 for rent, water 1
£1.71, council tax £6 and heating £16.04 per month, does this sound right? In the NCma book it says based on 20 hrs per week you can claim 17% heating and 5% for the rest. Does this have to be completely right or give and take a little?

Thanks

This is the table HMRC use.

Household expenditure

The agreement is based on the hours that childminders work and not on the number of children they care for. A childminder looking after a child on a full time basis for 40 or more hours each week is entitled to claim the full time proportion of expenses.

How this works is illustrated in the following table:

Hours worked % of Heating and lighting costs % of Water rates and Council tax Rent
10 8% 2%
15 12% 4%
20 17% 5%
25 21% 6%
30 25% 7%
35 29% 9%
40 (full time) 33% 10%
The full time figures shown in the table should be scaled down from depending on hours worked.

Wear and tear of household furnishings

A deduction of 10% of total childminding income may be made to cover the wear and tear of furniture and household items. This is intended to include household items which are not used wholly and exclusively in childminding. A childminder claiming this deduction may not however claim relief for the cost of replacing such household items. Reasonable costs of cleaning household items where the need for cleaning is as a result of childminding activities may be allowed as a separate item.

The agreement also covers the following expenditure:

Food and drink

Reasonable estimates for the costs of food and drink provided for the children being cared for are acceptable and receipts will not be required.

Phone the HMRC Business Education and Support Team on 0114 296 9431 and ask them to post you a copy of their guidance document: 'Childminders - information about tax and National Insurance 2012-2013'. It contains the information you require and a lot of the rules to make it easier for CMs to keep all their tax and NI affairs in order.

Or you can download it from the Northern Ireland Childminding Association (the NCMA doesn't seem to have it on their public pages) here (http://www.nicma.org/cms/publications/HMRC%20Childminders.pdf).

The bands in the table are only an illustration, you can scale down exactly from the full-time percentages.

So multiply 33% and 10% by 28/40 to get 23.1% and 7%.

But if you don't look after your own kids while childminding you may be able to claim higher percentages of more costs, including Council Tax and mortgage interest.
