He counts as a 12yr old but you must make sure your able to provide for them all!

He's just a 12 year old. As long as he has no really difficult extra needs he is just a 12 year old- not a 12 year old with downs.

I can't understand why you have you need to put "12 year old with downs", i doubt you treat him any different in your setting to any of your other mindees but putting it like you have does not sound nice

i understand why; the OP was not sure if a child with extra needs was counted differently in the ratios. i have been minding a child with such additional needs, that although mindee was 7, mindee needed to be treated as though one of my LOs, and it did impact heavily on the care i could provide, although it didn't affect my ratios.

thank you loocyloo i am glad you understand. :)

and karen m i wasent stating it to be mean or to make him sound bad and that wasent my intention at all !!!! it is a difficult situation to judge so was asking for advice!

if i had just put their ages then you would have thought why is she asking that question cause she is well within her numbers i had to put that about the downs so you understood why i was asking that question

As long as you are within your insurance numbers and are providing for the others as well then you are okay as 12 year olds don't count when calculating numbers

If a LO has needs that take more of your time then it is sometimes best to alter your ratios when you have that particular child,I look after a LO (my neice (9 mnth)with cerebral palsy and i always limit myself to one other while i have her ,Its not a requirement as far as i'm aware but some childminders reflect this differing ratio in their costs ..ie ..1 to 1 childcare at 3x the hourly rate so I'm presuming that vix just needed clarification on this specialised area of care so would need to give us all the info about the child as telling us child was 12 and no other info wouldnt have given her the advice that she was looking for.
I believe if the child wont take up more than his share of attention so as not to detract from the care of the under 8's then he wouldnt be counted any differently than any of your other over 8s ,if you feel he needs more attention than your other over 8's you might concider reducing your under 8,s by 1 to reflect this. You already know the child and any limitations(if any ) so your ratios should be fine x
