Can I ask for those of you who have facebook pages - do you set up a group as your page or set it up as a person? I was always planning on setting up a website but over 2 years on I still haven't found the time so am thinking of doing this instead. Also a new parent has requested me as a friend and I don't feel comfortable accepting so thought this may be a better option? Any tips? Thank you!

I have a page! I also have specific permissions for photos and info to be put up there as well.

I have not been doing it for long, and don't update too much at the moment as trying to get other things in place. I do think it is good though.

One parent does get photos of their children in the scrapbooks, but not all the pictures, so this way I can upload pretty much all of them and tag parent. She commented the other day that she was looking at them in bed and said how lovely it was so see what they get up to and how happy they look!

Being a techno phobe I never had a face book page but set one up in my childminder name and just have photos of the house and art work children have done. Only parents are friends. Parents post news on there they want to share with me and I print it off and put in lj's. I've yet to get the hang of doing post etc.

I have a fb page just for my parents, noses were looked down at it at a recent NCMA meeting but as I said I have permission forms just for facebook and also I only allow my parents on there, also I have it on the highest security setting. My parents love it and they get to see what their children are doing straight away as well as putting up notices :clapping:

Morning all, this is great, as I am brand new to this I was going to ask what was the general thought of having a page on facebook.
I wasn't sure if was frowned upon or not. I think it's a great way to be in touch, as most people are on the site in one way or another.:)

Thank you for all your comments and to those who put there page links in - they look great. Well done! I was thinking of doing one instead of a website so would be for parents and prospective parents alike. I have a permissions form which mentions photos on websites and all my parents have ticked to say yes. However I think maybe I should do a specific facebook one. I guess the downside would be if a parent isn't on facebook they may not want their children on there. I think I may send out an email to parents to ask what they think?

All but one of my parents are fine with me putting photos of their children on my facebook page and I have specific permission for this. I have also had quite a lot of enquiries through this, more so than any other way of advertising!

That's good to know - love your pics.

How do you set up this type of page? This isn't the "group" is it?

I have a page and a group.

I prefer the page. I have it set to open cos I don't put on any pics of kids, or any info about where we are going to be going or what we are going to be doing. I put everything on after the fact, and use it mostly to share pics of our activities - no kids included.
I use it as much to network with other practitioners as I do to share with parents.

My group is set to private, I used to put more info onto that one, but still no names or kid pics cos it is facebook at the end of the day, and as much as the setting tags say secure, we all know it is not in the least bit secure. I don't really use it any more though. I prefer my page cos it's a quicker and better way to share ideas than a closed group.

We have a 'Like' page. It has had a really good response and we love sharing ideas on their. It is open to all and all but one parent gave permission to use photos. However all photos of children have now been removed after we had someone like the page that we didn't feel comfortable with. We did block the liker but you can just never be to sure ;)

No this is a page rather than a group! Use this link to get you going, it's really easy https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

Thanks for that.

Another question (sorry!) with this type of page I am presuming anyone can "like" and view anything? or can you "approve" people?

I think anyone can like it. To control who views things you need to set up a group and you as the admin can control who sees it. There are pros and cons of both, I guess it depends on whether you want to use it as a type of marketing tool too, in which case the page is better than the group.

Thanks soooo much. Lots to think about then. I have emailed a questionaire to my parents and will wait to see their views before deciding which to go ahead with.

When I said I have a page, I meant I have an account in my name for childminding, which people can read with or without friending me (although I do like it when other practitioners friend me - but I always check out the info on their page first to see why they are friending me, I have a few in my waiting list that have not messaged me and have no childcare related info on their page so I will not be friending them), and I also have a group with membership. I don't have a like page.

hahaha. Be like me, get them all and work out which one works best for you :) Where I am now the account is best, where I was before the groups was best. Just try them all.

I have a page - I use it to update parents about what we have been doing but also share ideas with others. I do not add any photos of the children tho.

i can set privacy on pics, but all parents have given permission except one, who gives permission on individual pics. also you can block people which is another good option
