View Full Version : washable nappies - smell

not the usual dirty smell but the really nasty 'hamster cage' smell of ammonia.

New mindee (16m)has washables but as soon as they are a bit damp they stink. I am sure I read on here somewhere that there was something to do when you washed them that would eliminate the smell. It's really unpleasant :(

Mum takes them to wash but wondered if there were any tips to pass on. They are colourful fleece outsides with a pouch to put absorbent pad in

Ideas please? I can smell her all the time and an older mindee noticed it today too

I always soaked mine in nappy san, Bicarbonate of Soda/Soda crystals are good for odours x

A good soak in bicarb followed by a boil wash with prewash, then.repeat.

I have googled the problem and they need to 'strip wash' them! loads of rinsing involved to get rid of build up of detergent :thumbsup:

Yes strip washing and if they are kept in a bucket detergent wiping that and putting in a few drops of teatree oil each time it is emptied

3 of my kids today have these nappies ... there is no smell... they are washed as above.

spoke to mum, she will strip wash them before I have mindee next week - result......I hope! :thumbsup:

never had the problem with other mindees in the past, was a new one on me. Thanks for the input :thumbsup:
