I remember reading a thread that mentioned rainbow rice and activities that you can do with it. I was wandering how to colour the rice? I have got some rice and some food colouring ready but not sure what to do next? I plan to use it on our tough spot, using containers and measuring spoons etc. Any ideas would be greatly recieved. Thank you.x

I use the one Sarah suggested and its really simple

Another thing you could do is rainbow salt crystals

This is a nice activity that is a bit different if this is any help

MAKE: rainbow salt crystals

Most kids will love colouring the crystals so be prepared to keep dishing out new salt until the fun runs out.

You will need

• salt
• food colouring
• spoon
• baking paper
• glue
• paper

1. Put some salt into a number of small plastic containers – we used one tablespoon per bowl. Add a few drops of food colouring to each container...

2. then stir the salt around until all the salt crystals are coloured. Keep going until you've coloured all your salt.

3. Tip salt onto baking paper and allow to dry.

4. Use paper, glue and your colourful salt to create pictures. If you're not in the mood for this just store your salt in an old spice jar and use as colourful sprinkles for future craft projects

When we did rainbow rice at work (3 years and under) we let the children mix the rice and colouring. then they laid it out on paper and we gave them lolly sticks and let them push it around while it was still wet. We had some lovely print pictures from that:).

Some of the older children tried mixing the food colourings to make different colours (active learning experience):)

I found that if you just add a couple of drops of food colouring to the rice it dries really quickly ready for use.

The children spent ages just running their fingers though it.

Since then we have made shakers using the coloured rice in clear bottles, used the rice with glue to make pictures and added it to the sand in the sand pit ( not my plan but kinda looks nice!)

 Make sure to document that you are following the child's interest!

When I coloured my ice I just put it in a zip lock bag added a few drops of food colouring and shake the bag, I didn' wet it and it coloured in various tones which is interesting and pretty in itself. Linda
