lo not telling me when he needs to go

Hi all ive looked after lo for 2.5 years he is now 3yrs 3mths, at 2.5 yrs he started potty training and as long we ( me and his mum) put him on reguraly then he was fine, but even now nearly 1 yr on he doesnt tell me and unless i tell him to go ( which he is great at ) then he just does a wee, what can i do to get him to realise that he needs to tell me or he just needs to go?
