Can anyone help me out here?
All the paperwork I have read on the revised EYFS seems to be saying the ratios (6 children under 8, only 3 of which can be under 5, and 1 of which can be under 1) are staying the same. But I was talking to Ofsted about a change of address and the lady on the phone mentioned the fact we now get to decide for ourselves how many children we care for and they don't do variations anymore?
That doesn't make sense?
What is actually happening? Is anyone clear?

There are numerous threads about this. Basically if you would need a variation now from September you can decide for yourself as long as you risk assess and let all other parents know. This is not for new business and is for exceptional reasons only.

So if lo comes Tuesday and Wednesday, parent asks if lo can come Thursday morning as she has a funeral but would take you to four under five but still six under eight,. You can risk assess check with other parents and in effect grant yourself a variation.

Thanks Sarah but this still doesn't really explain this properly.
Do we have to stick to the same rules but can bend occasionally as long as we risk assess? Is that right? Just occasionally, not all the time?
Just doesn't make any sense.

You know in the past if you wanted to get a variation...?

If a parent asked you for a few extra hours and you couldn't do it without checking with ofsted first...?

So you filled in the form and waited 3 weeks and the parent lost interest and went elsewhere...?

Or Ofsted said yes and you had 2 babies for a couple of hours because you proved on the risk assessment you sent into them that you could cope and it was continuity of care..?

Well it's exactly the same process except now you can do the risk assessment / proving you can do it yourself

Ofsted will check it at inspection and if there are any complaints about over minding of course - but you are in charge from now on.

Does that make more sense? :D

Yes I think so.
So my guess is that you can decide for yourself if you can adjust a few things here and there but we still must stay under the number of 6 under 8s at one time?

As long as you are only changing numbers for continuity of care in exceptional circumstances... that's what the requirements state :D
