went on a course this evening run by the council, it was regarding the EYFS and children starting school, cant remember the exact title, anyway at the end the lady said who would like to host the next meeting and what time would be good for everyone i put my hand up and asked if we could do evenings at 7pm and she said 'at yours' er no not that many people in my home, she looked puzzled untill I said I was a childminder then she said that the meeting was aimed at daycare centers, preschools and nuseries yet all the paperwork was exactly what we do and follow, when I pointed this out she said ' I dont have a problem with you attending but I dont know that you need to do all this paperwork' she was lovley but I am shocked that people delivering the EYFS dont realise that we childminders deliver the same care , work by the same guidlines and need to be informed of any changes, I am shocked that we are still not accepted as being on par with day nurseries etc.

No wonder we feel like we are fighting a constantly losing battle to be recognised as the professionals we are

Oh dear thats not good. I find that we are not taking as seriously as nurseries & often people dont realise that we have to train & do the same as them. Very disheartening..think childminders need a bit of an ad campaign or something to make people realise! Especially parents as they are often surprised when I tell them. They always presume you are cheaper as you offer less than nurseries which really pees me off!!

Nothing surprises me anymore :( Our council are only running the revised EYFS briefings for schools, pre-schools, nurseries and specialist childminders! i am a specialist childminder so have attended it however i still believe it is grossly unfair on the rest of the childminders who provide and deliver the EYFS!!! Oh and i now feel that i have an obligation to go through it with the other childminders because they are my colleagues and friends!!!

Excuse spelling mistakes, am tired  xx

That is just appalling! Even the people delivering the EYFS are not aware of what we do!

as Sarah says nothing surprises me any more I'm finding it quite depressing being a childminder at the moment tbh if it wasn't for my lovely mindees and parents I think i'd just give up.

It doesn't surprise me. If fact the more I listen to and read in the media and comments I get from people is making me like this job less and less.

our (new) early years learning advisor ( or some such title ;) ) has arranged a meeting next week for 'all those that deliver EYFS' ... she invited all local preschools & nurseries ... after i spoke to my DO () ... she has now invited childminders that deliver funded sessions and once at the meeting i shall ask why she hasn't invited all the other childminders as we all deliver EYFS!

i'm sure its an oversight as north yorks are very good at including childminders in everything!

I went on a EYFS course last night, which was for childminders, and was very good. She was very positive and understood what we do. She repeatedly said we were professionals.

She also mentioned they were a bit disappointed in the uptake of childminders doing the course as they have provided quite a lot.

There was quite a discussion on the 2 year check, as many childminders said parents wouldn't take them seriously and felt that many parents would feel we were not "qualified" to do the check and several childminders said parents still have the attitude that we are just like them, we just stay at home looking after their chidren.

Many of the childminders there agreed that when the EYFS was brought in we should have had our name changed.

It's very sad, but not surprising :(

I've been on several courses where the instructor obviously has no idea at all what a childminder is or does. I've had to sit there being told "this won't apply to you as you're just a childminder". When I state that I do follow the EYFS exactly the same as nurseries & pre-schools, I generally get told "yes, but you don't do it to the same level as they do".
Umm, I know I don't...I do it better and at a higher level than most of them do

Sometimes it really makes me wonder why I bother when even the so called "EYFS experts" don't know what we do.

This is what i said at the last NCMA regional meeting i went to, are they bothered though??????????????

This is exactly why I'm not part of the NCMA and don't pay the fee because until we are recognised as professionals I don't think they are doing their job. They need to do more for us, then I will pay :D
