Default What to use - smell matching pots

I'm wanting to make an activity where children have to guess and match the smell of a hidden item (herbs, coffee, fruit etc) and need ideas on how to present the activity.

I have looked online and you can buy little pots with holes in them, but I don't want to spend any money. I don't have enough empty spice jars. I don't want them to be able to see the object that they are smelling.

Any ideas on how to present the items?

Used to do this. I used yoghurt pots and muslin square held by an elastic band, but any porous material works...a piece of tissue or kitchen roll possibly?

I used to use really pungent smells so that they could really smell it through the Muslim and would last the morning through several groups sniffing.
Great activity....do two of everything so that they can match the smells. Put an odd one in ...which should not have a partner....call it the ‘find the odd one out ‘activity.

Great idea, thanks. My poor husband will despair when I tell him he has to keep all of the yoghurt pots!

I made little ‘parcels’ with a thin piece of fabric and some ribbon. I cut the fabric into squares, put the smelly bits in the middle, gathered it up ant tied it with ribbon.

I haven’t got any photos of them unfortunately, but they looked quite similar to these crispy lamb wontons

The children couldn’t see what they were smelling, but could feel what was in the bag, adding another dimension to their exploration.

Mouse, your photo cracked me up - but I can see exactly what you did! Thank you.
