Default Old CDs - to bin or not to bin?

I have loads of CDs that we never listen to anymore (adults). I'm considering sending the lot to the charity shop, because I could really do with the space. I've seen lots of cute ideas on pinterest for things to do with old CDs and have offered some as craft activities in the past, but they have never really been a huge hit.

Off the top of my head we've tried:
Using them as a pond/frozen lake in small world trays
decorating with glass pens in mandala styles
general decorating with acrylic paint or collage materials
using them to make snails and other garden animals
making mobiles and watching the reflections dance around
    sorting shiny and dull objects
added one to the shape box

I guess they are really good for posting activities too.

Have any of you thought of some irresistible ideas for old CDs?

Any 'real' CDs that are still playable and boxed go to the charity shop. I hate the thought of anything that's still fit for its original purpose ending up in the bin, which they would do eventually even if used for crafts.

The ones I have used are the blanks that we've recorded on, ones that don't have cases of ones that aren't genuine. Like you say though, they're never that popular. I did once put some in the water table. Some were blank and some were drawn on. The children were interested in seeing the distortion, especially when they swirled that water then waited for it to settle. We have also used them for making pom poms (not very successful, but a good threading activity) and we've hung them in the tree to catch the sun.

We love playing our cd's! And our LP's and cassettes! Though we no longer play mini discs.
We have digital music too...but it is so nice to find music to play in the kitchen and in the car, some I have forgotten and finding them on the cd racks is like Christmas all over - I probably wouldn't think enough about looking for them on amazon or Apple or some haven't been top of the list to be downloaded on iPods or phones.

As a more ancient person I can thoroughly advise to keep music, you will remember so much through it and you may forget to listen to it on digital. You have a lot more time to listen to music as the children grow older too- and they love mocking you on your tastes but secretly like that they are building up an historical music knowledge. My oldest 'earnt' money at uni taking part in pub quizzes - his music knowledge kept him in beer.
My sons and friends love to look through and find oldies too now, it promotes so much conversation.

My youngest does use old ones for coffee coasters.

We hang old computer discs in a tree - just where the sun catches it - next to seeds too so keeps off the birds from my veg patch.
Our music room used to have a cd border! That wasn't my favourite use but at the time did look quite good.

In your dementia, cd's will be a visual reminder of all the music you used to love!!!!
I'm sure if I glance through our music collection I will be able to remember my favourite band!

Thanks for your responses! Very interesting. Don't worry Mouse, I wouldn't use any stuff that people might want to buy. So far I have used free stuff from magazines, and even some Ofsted CDs.

    Still undecided then!

this week, the old cds ( and these are the freebie type ) that are in my 'loose parts' boxes have been added to KNEX creations to create 'fidget spinners' and spinning tops!
the children also enjoy making patterns with them on the floor and watching the lights refract and make rainbows around the room.

I'm a bit like you Floradora - although we have an awful lot of digital music instantly available - without a rack of cds to look through, I forget what I could listen to! and I have piles of them in the car

I'm so glad that I kept all my vinyl records. For years I had nothing to play them on but recently I've bought one of those mini record players. There's something about the sound of vinyl that can't be found on a CD or cassette.
Like you say Floradora, I only have to look at a record or cassette and the memories come flooding back. I just don't get that feeling with CDs.

Haha. No music obviously. Can't even remember what they were now though - maybe the outstanding logo stuff that they send you. Also some with stuff from my teaching days - probably DFEE stuff, primary framework etc.

Mouse I know what you mean about the sound from LPs and singles. I don't think I do get that nostalgic looking at my CDs - maybe it's not too far from the present day yet. My albums on vinyl though...I can still see my Michael Jackson one (is he holding a cub of some sort?), the Greese one and my Nolan Sisters album! I used to love opening them up and seeing all the small photos inside.

It appears to be very popular to cut them up and use them to decorate stairs, fireplaces or as a splashback.

I love my vinyl records i have all my brothers and dads and they do bring back lots of memories

I was never a big Michael Jackson fan, but I have got the Bad album. I had Grease on cassette, but I've never had a Nolan Sisters album!

I used to like the album covers that had the lyrics on the inside.

It's funny isn't it how it was so important to know the words to the whole of the song! I couldn't care less now if I know all of the words or sing the wrong words in parts. We used to get 'Smash Hits' because they would have lyrics to songs inside too.

I used to love Smash Hits. Where I lived it was only available in a dark & dingy independent music shop and you used to feel really cool going in to get it!
