Default Which art materials for older kids?

I'm not arty in any way, but I know some of you are. DD is almost 7 and loves art activities. I sense she is moving on from the usual craft resources - pom poms, glitter, pipe cleaners etc but I don't really know what to provide now. We have charcoal, pastels, watercolours and some decent sketching pencils. What do you all provide for your older children or mindees?

Has she tried decopatch? My daughter loves it. If you look round you can buy reasonably priced papers and glue, then you can use it on just about anything. I used it to cover an old spice rack to make a nail varnish holder for my daughter's room then used the same paper to cover a wooden bowl to hold her earrings. It's pretty easy for all ages.

That sounds perfect! I've seen bits of stuff in shops in the past and never really looked into it as she was happy with the younger 'collagy' stuff, but I think she would love this now. Do you have to use decopatch glue?

    Off to amazon now!

I've only used the proper decopatch glue, but I think you can use watered down PVA glue. I believe you can also use paper napkins instead of the decopatch paper, but again, I haven't tried that. I'm sure google, youtube and pinterest would have lots of ideas. I just daren't look or I'll end up getting the craft box out now rather than doing paperwork!

Have you ever ordered anything from Crafty Crocodile? They do a good range of things and used to offer a discount on your first order.

Decoupage is great you don't even have to use the "proper" paper I have used wrapping paper before.

Has she tried knitting or crocheting?

I used to love "Colour by Numbers" kits at that age, especially any to do with animals.

Painting By Numbers | Kids Painting & Colouring | Kids | Hobbycraft

I introduced my two children to something similar and they went nuts for them. Their art is still proudly on display in each of their bedrooms.

    Hope it helps,

Thanks for all the fab replies! Fussy - we tried knitting as she is desperate to do it but she found it difficult. I think she needs another year. I don't know how to crochet - is it easier than knitting? I'll have a look on youtube later as I would love to do that.

Lollipop kid - she had a paint by numbers last year and did ask for another one a few months ago - I had forgotten all about it, so brilliant! Thanks for the reminder. x

I used to love colour by numbers kits! I print simple colour by number sheets off for the minded children and they always enjoy them as well.

At that age I also like model kits, especially motorbikes. Other things my daughter has liked are Fimo and sequin art.

I would say take her into somewhere like Hobbycraft and see what takes her fancy, but if she's anything like my daughter (and me!) she'll come away with half the shop!

It's bad enough that I keep coming on here when I should be doing my accounts, never mind getting started on Pinterest! I've only recently got into it and haven't quite figured out how it works. I just spend hours drifting from one thing to another and giving my brain an ideas overload!

The looms are easier to use for children and quite cheap to pick up.

If you were near me you could borrow one of mine yes I had to buy one or maybe a pack

Oh Mouse I've just looked on crafty crocodile's website! It's fab!

I'm quite glad I don't live near a Hobbycraft. As I don't drive I'd have to get DH to take me to one and then I wouldn't be able to buy half the stuff I 'needed'. I'll have a look on their website though.

I'm sure if you sign up to the website they give you a discount as well!

Our nearest Hobbycraft used to be a 45 minute drive away, then they opened a new one 10 minutes down the road. So good...but so bad for my bank account!

It is pleasing to my bank account that hobbycraft is a trip away

Same here! Last time I went I bought a big wooden skeleton ... No idea why, I just HAD to have him!

My dd has recently been making lots of origami book marks ... The ones that are animals or monsters and sit on the corner of the page. I think she found it on YouTube.

That's another one added to my favourites!

I may end up rushing round at the last minute trying to get my tax return done on time, but at least I'll be happy in the knowledge that my books are all decorated with beautiful bookmarks

Have you ever ordered anything from Crafty Crocodile?

Well I've just spent £20 at Crafty Crocs. Very exciting. I managed to do it with DH in the same room too. He normally clocks me when I get up to go and get my purse/card but he didn't tonight! Seeing as my purse is right here, I might just have a look on the Hobbycraft website...

The top line 'Have you ordered anything from CC's?' was cut and pasted from Mouse's post. How do I get it to be a different colour so that you know I am quoting someone else? What I mean is, when I just want to quote one sentence from someone's post and not the whole post. Sorry if that makes no sense what so ever!
