    What age?
I don't plan much for a new child- they are so excited to see all the new toys and stuff I just let them explore, look at books together (lots of good bonding time), just get to know them, make lots of obs and then build planning from there for future weeks/month.
I'd get out the paints one day, water play, playdough, get out in the garden and sandpit- just start introducing things and see what he likes and what he has experience of.
Also I'd be going with parent's input on what the child likes- ie having the train set out, or cars, or whatever they are in to.

I rarely 'plan' activities anyway, just have ideas of things we might do, follow the children's lead and have well stocked cupboards of stuff! Some times I have an idea that we'll make xyz for an occasion like mothers day or red nose day etc but if the children take us on another tangent that is fine!

    (I have 1-3 yr olds)

when children are over 2 we need to start providing them with more structured learning opportunities.

This doesn't mean huge amounts of written planning - most of what you do is covered by your routine. Then in addition to your routine start to think about offering invitations for the lo to play with you supporting them.

Make sure the process is as important as the end product and have lots of fun
