Default Art and Crafts based on a book. Anyone have an idea please?

    Hi.

I am volunteering on this playgroup and decided to have an arts and crafts session based on a book and obviously will read the book too!

I have one activity in mind that I did many many times (not based on a mainstream famous title book) but the subject is an amazing cake...

Problem is: whilst for the craft session, making an amazing, bright colourful cake is fun, the setting have just focused on healthy eating for the whole term before Easter...I wasn't working there yet but I feel that going now with an activity about cakes and fillings is not going to go down well...

So, what else can I do? I can think of many titles but what crafts activities can I do to match a book? The time frame is short, I will need to do it on one morning and be aware of the other routines too (snack/outside etc)..

Kids are mostly 3 year old but there are a few 2 year old there too.

How about hungry caterpillar ... threading wool or pipe cleaner caterpillars through punched holes in pictures of healthy food ( and the not so healthy ) or lacing a paper green leaf?
Could then do butterflies where you paint on paper and fold in half.

We did the hungry caterpillar for world book day the children loved it. We made egg box caterpillars, painted butterflies, made fruit kebabs, talked about healthy and unhealthy foods.

Default Wear going on a Bear Hunt

Taking it outdoors. Can you hide a Bear somewhere? Maybe set up some obstacles to go over/under telling the Story whilst looking for Bear or something along those lines and including the children. Then afterward ask them to draw their favourite part of the story or a Bear and write their captions underneath. Not really 'crafty' but I did it with preschoolers in a Nursery and they loved it.
    Hungry Caterpillar good suggestions too.

Theres a lovely book called jack in the box , box modelling would go well with that.

or any elmer book and make a milk bottle elmer ( if you search on here there will be a link to Paulines youtube video how to guide)

'In wibbly pigs garden' - you could decorate some paper cups then add soil and plant beans

It would probably be easer to choose book first - then we can help come up with a craft activity to suit!
