    Default Rainbow rice and pasta

Water and food colouring in a bag mix in rice/pasta. Lay on baking sheet to dry preferable over 24 hours. Enjoy!

How much food colouring did you use. I once tried making red spaghetti as a Halloween activity (they were supposed to be worms lol). But I couldn't get the colour to show until i Used loads of colouring and then colouring came off in my hands so kids didn't play with it in the end. This was ages ago though when my eldest was a toddler. I may give it another go.

I used a lot for lighter colours and a little for dark but no more than 5 or 6 drops. I mixed the colouring with the water first so when the rice went in it absorbed it. Pasta didn't work out so well.

We put rice into soak with food colouring Friday. Got 5 different coloured tubs of rice soaking and leaving them over the weekend. Can't wait to see how brightly coloured they are. Not sure what to do with them yet though.............very excited! Thanks for the top tip!

Depending on ages just let them play with them, make arts and crafts and when they get bored make sensory bottles, buckets etc. put them in the freezer with water and make ice cubes (our favourite) x

Brilliant ice idea! I can see them getting brighter and brighter and didn't want to just waste them, even though easy and cheap to keep redoing. So great idea to play with them until they fed up then can use them for create and bottles. Thank you. Gem.

Hey all I have never personally done this.

Do you soak the pasta and rice in colored water or do you just add the coloring to the rice and wait till it is absorbed?

I have just added colluding to the rice in a bowl but not sure if it's going to work?! Lol

I never add water, just food colouring. Usually put rice in a bowl add colouring and stir til I get the shade I want then tip onto a tray to dry.

Yes it does. I've just coloured 8 bags or rice and 8 bags of pasta ready for tomorrow using your method. I put the rice/pasta into a zip seal food bag, added a few drops of white vinegar and a few drops of food colouring, sealed the bag, rubbed the contents of the bag until the food colouring had covered everything, patted the bags to max the contents flatter and left it over night. Woke up this morning and they were all dry. Didnt have to spread any of it out over trays etc. X

We did this a few months ago and they had weeks of play with it, I must do it again for newbies
Such a cheap simple activity, although it did confuse my oh, coming home from work and seeing trays of rainbow coloured rice drying on the kitchen table, work tops and on the unit in the living room, any available space really lol. I'm lucky he's so laid back and just let's me get on with it!!x
